Communication Skills

Students will need to learn to present materials to themselves and audiences. They will also need to learn how to communicate effectively and be able to negotiate during decision making.

Applying Their Knowledge

Students will need to apply their learned knowledge from the course or topic towards finding a solution to the problem at hand. This can include learning transference such that students will take ideas and principles from other subject areas to help them.

Partnerships with Local Businesses

Schools and classrooms will develop meaningful solutions with local businesses and organizations. This can include expertise from the business owners, sponsorships, as well as other types of relationships that will help all parties.

Critical Thinking

The open ended nature of the problems and projects will require students to be flexible in their decision making but also require their awareness of their projects as a whole. They will need to develop the skills to manage their project and give them the experience of what it is like in the real world.

Explorative Learnjing

Students will need to drive their own learning as their projects begin to pose problems. Sometimes students may need to learn about an industry and sometimes they may need to learn how to video edit or program to develop their presentation or program/app.

Incorporating Project Based Learning has been one of the most rewarding experiences for me as a teacher as well as for my students. We worked with our high school students to design classroom furniture that would help elementary students with disabilities for their Cooper Hewitt Design Challenge.

We decided to try PBL for our history/humanities course. We decided as a grade level to have our students to think about how our students could as future city planners, reimagine our cities as we think about becoming more green and more energy efficient. It allowed our students to apply a good deal of their knowledge about policies and to have them explore the laws at the local, state, and federal level.

We had our students working with a local hospital to help children with psychosocial support and the hospital staff with support. It was a really great experience for our students working with adults and patients. It turned out to be a really meaningful experience for everyone.
